Becoming a parent for the first time can be a daunting experience. Getting married – we had a course for that, but becoming a parent? There isn’t any compulsory course that we have to take, which leaves us to do our own research, be it from articles online, asking experienced family members and of course social media. But with so much information available on the net, things can sometime get confusing and contradicting.

Sure, most people will tell you that you’ll “learn on the job”, but wouldn’t it be better if we knew what to expect and be better equipped with the right knowledge? It’ll definitely be less stressful, that’s for sure! Knowledge is power, and when you combine that with some hands-on experience, we’re sure you’ll be more confident in your parenting journey ahead.

That’s where we come in. Recently, after a long hiatus of physical bootcamps during the pandemic, Parenthood and Parentheses in partnership with CryoCord organised a physical workshop here in Kuala Lumpur to equip new parents and parents-to-be on the know-how of parenting.

The Bootcamp started off with a demonstration from Ms. Teh Hui En & Ms. Poon Jia Yin, Physiotherapists from Tung Shin Hospital who taught participants some simple pregnancy-friendly exercises that could relieve back pains and leg cramps. They also demonstrated certain massage techniques that hubbies can do at home to help ease mummies pain.

Couples then went on to learn more about breastfeeding and the correct steps to latch baby onto the breast in order to have a successful breastfeeding journey ahead. Sister Elizabeth who is a Certified Lactation Consultant and Infant Care Coach not only talked about breastfeeding, but also taught participants on how to carry baby using the hospital lock system that ensures baby’s safety while being carried.

What made the bootcamp interesting was the hands-on lesson that both mummies and daddies experienced. Each couple was given a baby doll where they had to practice the right way to hold, carry and lay down a baby. Participants were also taught step-by-step on how to bathe a baby and received first-hand answers to budding questions like, how much water to add in the bathtub, how to ensure the right water temperature for babies, how to safely hold a baby in a bathtub and lots more.

Participants were also educated on the importance of cord-blood banking and how it could potentially save lives by Ms. Vivian from CryoCord. Daddies were also given the chance to participate in a diaper changing challenge that resulted in four daddies bringing home a whole box of Applecrumby’s chlorine-free baby diapers.

Not only that, participants also got the chance to win some lucky draw prizes and were treated to a delicious lunch before heading back home.

Another highlight of the bootcamp was also the reveal of the 24-hour Breastfeeding Call Centre (+6016-5257483 ) where parents can get support or advice on breastfeeding. Whether it’s during the day or in the middle of the night, parents can call and speak to a breastfeeding professional that’ll help guide new parents on any issues that they may be having while on their breastfeeding journey.
