Zoom Again? These online learning tips will help parents prepare for a successful virtual school year

Distance learning is now a new norm. With the current MCO 3.0, families are now taking on much more responsibilities for their kids’ learning than ever before. In order for distance / remote learning to be successful, parents need support.

Also, kids may or may not talk about the virus, online classes or how the pandemic has affected their social lives, but they’re most definitely feeling it. Parents and educators should try to lead with love, and that strong relationships with kids make for a positive educational experience.

So how can you help your kids for a successful school year ahead? We’ve listed down some tips that might just put your mind at ease.

#1 Create a learning space

With the whole family ‘stuck’ together during this period, having their own personalised corner dedicated to learning, creating and reading, will help to enhance their focus as well as increase their motivation levels.

We know what you’re thinking, “my house got no space lah!”. Well, it may seem a little daunting or a nuisance at first, but it doesn’t have to be a huge room or space. Even the tiniest corner in a room can be transformed into the perfect spot for learning with a little creativity and innovation.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when setting up a learning space:

  • Make sure there’s good lighting
  • Have comfortable study seatings
  • Personalise their space
  • Keep things organised

#2 Set a routine

It’s a common fact that children thrive on routines. With the current situation of remote learning, it’s up to us as parents to make new routines so our children continue to feel at ease and safe.

While the nation is combating  COVID-19, try setting up a routine as close to your child’s normal school schedule as possible. Additionally, it is also recommended that parents set up specific times for reading, math and other academic work, as well as breaks in between.

Children tend to be more cooperative and work harder if they know when they’re expected to work and for how long.

# 3 Encourage self-regulation

Self-regulation is basically the ability to understand/manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings in addition to things happening around you, which may include:

  • The ability to control strong feelings like frustration, excitement or anger
  • Calming oneself down
  • Focusing on a task
  • Control impulses

To encourage self-regulation, try these:

  • Praise your child when they show self-regulation and manage a tricky situation
  • Involve them in problem-solving and negotiations
  • Use calming down steps and strategies
  • Plan for challenging situations where it might be hard for younger children to behave well
  • Create a positive environment where they don’t feel judged

#4 Display their work

Displaying your child’s work lets them know that you value it. It also encourages us as parents to engage with it and show them how proud we are of them. When children choose work for displays, they also learn to reflect on their work.

So whenever your child creates an artwork or completes a test successfully, display it either in their learning corner, on the refrigerator, in their bedroom or any dedicated spot where the whole family can see.

#5 Invest in a learning-friendly laptop

When it comes to picking the right device for your children especially during these periods, you’d want something that is both functional and beneficial in supporting their learning.

For example, the ASUS BR1100F – an all-new, education-focused Windows 10 laptop series is especially designed to be the best learning companion for students of primary school education along with a tough and innovative design that’s made to last.

Some of the key features that this laptop include:

  • US military-grade reliability
  • ASUS AI Noise-Canceling + Noise-Reduction camera
  • ASUS BacGuard antibacterial protection
  • Low blue light emissions

Let’s expand a little!

Rubber bumper, spill-resistant keyboard and military-grade toughness

If you constantly cringe whenever your child knocks, bumps or even drops their laptop (which will probably get you screaming), with the ASUS BR1100 laptop and its military-grade toughness, there is less worry of the laptop going kaput easily.

For starters, all four exterior edges and corners are protected by a tough rubber bumper, which reduces the impact of physical shocks to ensure critical components are always safe and sound. Then there’s the spill-resistant keyboard, which can cope with liquid spills of up to 330 cc without harm – so minor splashes are easily drained, cleaned and dried.

With the whole family having their own zoom session at most times, you’ll be glad to know that the ASUS BR1100 has AI noise-canceling technology, which isolates  unwanted noise from human speech for clearer voice. At the same time, the webcam employs innovative 3D noise-reduction (3DNR) technology to remove up to 94% of random noise, significantly improving image quality. That means better quality videos and voice when attending zoom classes.

The ASUS BR1100 is also loaded with connectivity, including the latest 3.2 Gen 2 USB Type-C (USB-C) port — with support for high-speed data transfers and USB Power Delivery — along with a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, HDMI, microSD card reader and an Ethernet port for wired networking.

To help protect our children, the surfaces of these new learning-focused laptops are treated with ASUS BacGuard that is scientifically shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by over 99% over a 24-hour period. This helps to keep surfaces clean and sanitary, while potentially reducing the spread of harmful bacteria via contact.

Low blue light emissions

Another common concern for most parents is also the amount of blue light emissions that might lead to eyesight problems.

Well parents, you can breathe easy as the screen of the ASUS BR1100 is also certified by TÜV Rheinland for low blue light emissions, which may help to protect your children’s eyes from damage during prolonged study sessions.

To top it all off, the ASUS BR1100 has up to 10 hours battery life on a single charge, which means that it will be able to last for a full day of classes and more – empowering primary students to enjoy both uninterrupted learning and relaxation. This gives the opportunity to your child to focus on their studies in their own private learning corner without having to worry about plug points and extension cables.
