Shield Your Skin Now: The Power of Sunscreen You Can’t Ignore

As fortunate as we are to live in Malaysia with its year-round warm, tropical weather, it’s important to always remember to protect our skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Shockingly, a recent study found that almost half of Malaysians neglect to use sunscreen regularly, leaving themselves vulnerable to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

The National Cancer Registry reports a rising incidence rate of skin cancer, underscoring the critical need for better awareness and preventive measures. Sunway Medical Centre Velocity (SMCV) Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Nur Ashikin Ahmad, shares that sunscreen should be an essential part of everyone’s daily routine, irrespective of whether they are outdoors or indoors. “UVA rays can pass through home windows and penetrate deeper into the skin, contributing to premature skin ageing and pigmentation,” she explains.

Beyond UVA, UV radiation also includes UVB and UVC rays. While UVC rays are largely filtered by the ozone layer, UVB rays remain a significant concern as they are the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Additionally, Dr Nur Ashikin also highlights the dangers posed by blue light from our digital devices, which research suggests can penetrate even deeper into the skin than UVB rays, further accelerating skin ageing.

Sunscreen is your best friend for beating harmful UV rays, especially in Malaysia’s tropical climate! Dr. Nur Ashikin recommends SPF30 for daily use, but if you’re heading outdoors for sports, beach trips, or sightseeing, SPF50+ is your go-to. Apply it 15-30 minutes before sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV levels peak. Remember, sunscreen isn’t a one-and-done deal—reapply every 2-4 hours, especially after sweating or swimming, to stay fully protected.

With so many sunscreen options, knowing the differences is key to staying protected. Physical sunscreens, featuring ingredients like zinc or titanium oxide, create a barrier that reflects UV rays and are great for sensitive skin, though they might leave a white cast on darker tones. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens, with ingredients like avobenzone or octinoxate, absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They’re lightweight, blend beautifully, and look great on the skin but may irritate sensitive types. Choose what suits your skin best for effective sun protection!

While we often focus on the face, Dr. Nur Ashikin reminds us that other exposed areas—like the neck, hands, and legs—need sun protection too! These spots are just as prone to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer from prolonged UV exposure. Regularly applying sunscreen here not only reduces these risks but also helps maintain an even skin tone and elasticity. So, slather on that SPF from head to toe for full protection!

“The belief that individuals with darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen due to the protective functions of melanin is not entirely accurate,” says Dr Nur Ashikin, as melanin only provides partial protection. However, sun protection is still necessary as the melanin’s natural protection is far below the SPF30+ recommended for effective protection against sun damage.

In sunny Malaysia, daily sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from UV damage, premature ageing, and skin cancer. Choose the right sunscreen, apply it consistently, and make it a non-negotiable part of your routine—your skin will thank you!
