Can I Relactate After Stopping Breastfeeding?

Q: Is it possible to start breastfeeding again after having stopped for a few months?

It is possible, however, the process will be slower compared to the breastfeeding initiation at birth.

To help with relactation, it is important to breastfeed or pump at least 8 – 12 times per day or every 2-3 hours to give the breasts adequate stimulation.

The amount of milk produced initially will be small but will gradually increase (this may take several weeks).

To help increase breast milk production – you may consider medications such as Domperidone or the use of a lactation aid.

The aid delivers formula milk through tubing attached to the nipple – this is useful as it feeds the baby while providing stimulation to the breasts.

Most importantly, remain patient and persevere throughout your relactation journey – remember, babies are born with a natural suckling reflex.
