Firstly, cow’s milk protein is often the most common trigger.

Therefore, full breastfeeding is recommended if possible and mothers should avoid taking cow’s milk.

Next, frequent scratching will damage the skin so use creams and emollients that are free of preservatives, fragrance and soap to moisturise the skin.

If these fail, you need to see a doctor who may prescribe steroid creams to reduce inflammation.

Do note that prolonged use can lead to complications – so most doctors will advise against using it longer than a week.

Antihistamines and sometimes, antibiotics may also be given.

In very severe cases, desensitization or immunotherapy may be considered (you should consult an allergy specialist for this).

Besides that, doctors may also recommend a complete change to a fully hydrolysed milk (these will not cause an allergic reaction).

Unfortunately, there is no cure for eczema – it can only be managed.
