In an effort to educate and help millennial parents in their journey of parenting, Parenthood in collaboration with Nippon Paint Malaysia and Sunway Medical Centre organized the Millennial’s Guide to Parenthood workshop that highlighted various hot topics relevant to today’s parents with young children.

The first topic talked about How to Manage The 5 Most Common Children’s Illnesses- the Common Cold, Hands Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), Influenza, Diarrhoea and Dengue. Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Cham Weng Tang who delivered the talk went in depth about the cause and effect of each of the 5 illnesses, which are common yet preventable. He also highlighted how our walls (which are often overlooked) can be a medium of transmission of viruses and bacteria.

The next topic, which was a crowd favourite, talked about How to Handle Picky Eaters and What Parents Can Do by dietician Celeste Lau. Parents were given tips on how to differentiate a picky eater versus a problem eater. She also shared how to handle picky eaters and how parents can introduce a wider variety of food selection in order for their child to thrive and grow.

After a delicious buffet lunch, Dato’ Dr Rajbans Singh, President of Malaysian Wellness Society, spoke on the topic of Indoor Air Wellness. He highlighted how indoor air pollution can be 2 to 5 times worse than outdoors. With harmful pollutants all over the home, and in places one would never have thought off, he mentioned that this could affect a child’s health in the long term. Besides that, Dato’ Dr. Rajbans also shared some steps on how parents can take positive steps to improve indoor wellness, starting from home.

Another hot topic among the parents was How to Bring Out The Best Potential in Your Child by Ms. Sam Jeng Mun who is a clinical psychologist. Parents took some time to take an assessment that determined their type of parenting style. From this assessment, parents were given a better understanding about their own personality. Ms. Sam also elaborated on the 4 types of parenting styles and how the particular style may affect their child mentally.

Nippon Paint Wellness at School Programme

Aside from the talks by experts, the event also hosted close to 200 shortlisted students from the Nippon Paint Wellness at School Programme. The Nippon Paint Wellness at School Programme is part of an initiative by Nippon Paint Malaysia to educate pre-school children on the importance of wellness and staying healthy.

“We want to empower all parents to give their children clean air to breathe, safe indoors environment and freedom to be creative through every stage of their development, from infanthood, toddlerhood to childhood. For instance, if kids take the steps of washing their hands properly as a practice at young age, they will continue doing this as they grew older,” says Datin Wong Meng Lee, Assistant General Manager, Marketing, Nippon Paint Malaysia

During this programme, students from 56 school around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were each given a Ray Saves The Day storybook and Wellness Mask to inspire and educate them to be a superhero that takes charge of their own health and wellness at home and in school.

Nippon Paint believes that creativity is an important part of children’s wellness – and that it comes through play, so a colouring and drawing contest was also included in the story book to encourage creativity.
