7 Ways to Have A Safer & Healthier Home Amidst Covid-19

The recent increase of COVID-19 cases in our beloved country shows that if we let our guard down and do not follow the SOPs set by the government, an increase of cases in the country will happen.

With the recent numbers hitting an all time high for the past few weeks or so (even higher than when the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented earlier this year) it is more important than ever to ensure that we #StayAtHome as much as we can.

While we’re at home, it’s also important to improve overall wellness at home, here are some ways that you can  keep you and your family safe and healthy amidst COVID-19:

#1 Bring Plants Into Your Home

Whether you live in a landed property, apartment or condominium, bringing plants into your home is a great way to improve your indoor air quality. Plants such as snake plants, spider plants, and golden pothos are great at increasing oxygen levels in the air.

Having plants in your living room, bedroom, dining room and even washrooms will not only improve the air quality in your home, having some greenery around your home can help relax tired eyes too.

#2 Vacuum & Mop At Least Twice A Week

As a general rule, our home should be vacuumed and mopped from top to bottom at least twice a week to remove dust and dirt Certain areas of your home may need to be cleaned more often- for example the kitchen. It is best to mop kitchen floors every day with hot soapy water to prevent any oil build-up and possible falls.

As for homes with pets, daily vacuuming is recommended to remove fur, dust, dirt and other allergens  that your pet may have brought into your home. Consider getting a programmable robot vacuum and run it once or twice daily, especially if you’re a family with a tight schedule.

#3 Install an Air Purifier

Install an air purifier with a High- Efficiency Particulate Air Filter (HEPA) in the largest area in your home to remove dust and other pollutants in the air. Air purifiers refresh stale air in our home, reducing the chances of health issues caused by indoor pollutants, which can trigger respiratory infections, neurological problems, or aggravate symptoms in asthma sufferers.

#4 Avoid Cleaning Products That Contain VOCs

Check the labels of your cleaning products, as a lot of them contain Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that irritate airways, cause allergic reactions and headaches. If you’re not sure what to look out for or if you’re in any doubt, turn to natural cleaning remedies such as baking soda for scrubbing or a mix of vinegar and water for glass cleaning.

Don’t forget to keep the area you’re cleaning well ventilated by opening all windows and doors.

#5 Clear Garbage Daily Even If Its Not Alot

Leaving trash overnight at home means an accumulation of waste and rubbish before they are disposed of, which leads to foul smells, breeding of bacterias and nasty pests.

Be sure to dispose your garbage at the end of everyday and clean the inside and outside of your bin with anti-bacterial soap and dry thoroughly to prevent any bacteria growth.

#6 Use Exhaust or Range Hood When Cooking to Vent Out Pollutants

Using an exhaust fan or range hood while cooking can vent out pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and water vapour out of the kitchen.

A range hood is also effective in reducing moisture in a home, which keep indoor air healthier while discouraging the growth of mould.
