In today’s fast-paced world, parenting has evolved into a complex juggling act. Among the most significant challenges, parents face are striking a balance between their work and personal lives while ensuring their children’s well-being. Add to that the ever-present allure of gadgets and the paramount importance of nurturing both mental and physical health in children, and it becomes evident that modern parenting demands a delicate touch. In this article, we will delve into how parents can navigate these challenges and help their children flourish in the digital age.

Dr. Anis Siham, Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at Sunway Medical Centre
To shed more light on these issues, we’ve consulted Dr. Anis Siham, Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City. Dr. Anis shared her insights into the contemporary challenges of parenting and offered valuable advice on raising healthy and contented children.
Parental Work-Life Imbalance: The Tug of War
In today’s economy, the struggle to achieve work-life balance is all too familiar. With economic instability, many parents are finding themselves spending more time at work than they’d like. This increased workload can leave us feeling stretched thin, impacting both our well-being and that of our children.
Highlighting the importance of this equilibrium, Dr. Anis emphasised the need for parents to set aside dedicated family time. “Maintaining a work-life balance is crucial,” she said. “It’s about quality over quantity.”
Gadgets: Navigating the Digital Maze
Discussing the excessive use of gadgets in children, Dr. Anis pointed out the behavioural problems that can arise such as anger, tantrum, anxiety, and even depression. “The fast pace of information received online is hard to supervise,” she explained. She stressed the importance of setting healthy screen time limits and promoting face-to-face interactions.
As Dr. Anis wisely advised, “Parents should continue to uphold boundaries on screen time and encourage outdoor activities and physical exercise. It’s about finding a balance that works for your family.”
Mental and Physical Health: The Building Blocks of a Happy Childhood

Nurturing our children’s mental and physical health is paramount, especially in a world where they face pressures from all sides. Trust and maintaining a strong relationship with your children are foundational to their mental well-being. Being their biggest supporter can go a long way in ensuring their mental health.
According to Dr. Anis Siham, “Regular check-ups and vaccinations remain vital to your child’s physical well-being. Ensure your child feels comfortable discussing any concerns with you. Open communication is key to their emotional health.”
Impact of the Pandemic: Balancing Positives and Negatives
The pandemic has had a profound impact on our children, with both positive and negative outcomes. Some children have developed resilience and adaptability as they’ve navigated remote learning and isolation. They’ve had more time with immediate family, strengthening those bonds.
However, Dr. Anis acknowledged the challenges as well. “The prolonged isolation has led to increased rates of anxiety and depression in some children,” she said. “It’s crucial to address both the positive and negative consequences.”
Struggles Children Face Post-Pandemic
Dr. Anis also discussed the struggles children may face as they readjust after the pandemic. “The social and emotional toll of extended isolation is significant,” she noted. “Parents can help by creating opportunities for social interaction – whether through playgroups, going for picnics, extracurricular activities, or joining clubs and teams.”
She also emphasised the importance of addressing learning gaps and reintroducing healthier habits. “Parents can support their children academically by providing a structured routine, seeking tutoring or additional help when needed, and encouraging a positive attitude towards learning. Maintaining open communication, being empathetic, and offering a safe space for expression are essential ways parents can help children navigate the post-pandemic challenges,” she said.
Signs of Negative Well-Being and When to Seek Help

Studies have shown long COVID may affect 1 in 4 children with the most symptoms presented as mood changes. Apart from that, physical symptoms manifesting as multiorgan involvement such as persistent headaches, chest pain, abdominal pain and sudden inability to walk may also be due to long COVID syndrome. Often, these symptoms may be mild intermittently occurring but persist for a few months.
Dr. Anis also stresses that parents should not hesitate to seek medical attention when they observe these signs and believe their child’s well-being is at risk. “Early intervention can be crucial in addressing emotional and mental health issues in children. Consulting with a paediatrician, child psychologist, or psychiatrist can provide guidance and support to help the child cope with and overcome these challenges,” she said.
Advice to New Parents
For those new to parenthood, we understand that the journey can be overwhelming. Ensuring your child’s physical and emotional needs are met is key. Establish routines, maintain open communication, and create a nurturing environment for your child to thrive. Remember, every child is unique, so adapt your approach to suit their individuality.
As Dr Anis strongly emphasised, “By staying proactive and attentive to their child’s health, parents can provide the necessary support and care needed to promote overall well-being and mitigate potential health risks.”
