Dengue fever is a serious global health threat, affecting millions of people each year. Dengue was recognised as one of the top ten global health threats by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2019. As of 30 April 2024, over 7 million dengue cases have been reported worldwide, surpassing the total annual cases reported in 2023.
Dengue is hyper-endemic in Malaysia. In the first 6 months of 2024, the Ministry of Health (MoH) Malaysia reported 75,263 cases and 60 deaths, marking a 27% increase in cases and a 50% increase in deaths compared to the same period last year.
There is currently no definitive curative treatment for dengue, and no antiviral is available. Clinical management of dengue is mainly supportive. Additionally, individuals who are infected for the second time are at greater risk of severe dengue, which can be fatal. This highlights the importance of implementing effective prevention and control measures to combat the disease.
Recognising the urgent need for prevention, KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital in collaboration with Takeda Malaysia Sdn Bhd, marked a significant milestone on 24 August by hosting the “Dengue and Merdeka” Awareness Event. Coinciding with Malaysia’s 67th Independence Day, the event celebrated the launch of the dengue vaccination programme, a crucial step forward in combating this widespread disease.

The event was inaugurated by Puan Nurul Izzah Anwar, Chairperson of the Social & Economic Research Initiative (SERI), who stated, “Dengue has long been a challenge for our country. Despite intensive efforts by the government, such as widespread mosquito control programmes and community engagement in eliminating breeding sites, Malaysia continues to grapple with a high burden of dengue fever cases.”
She also reminded, “As we celebrate Merdeka, let us embrace continuous efforts that contribute to a healthier, safer Malaysia. The country can only progress with a population that is healthy and productive, something that can easily be threatened by a tiny Aedes mosquito.”
Earlier, Dato’ Mohamad Farid Salim, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, welcomed all guests and reminded them, “As we celebrate Merdeka, we must remain vigilant against the health threats we face, particularly the growing risk of dengue. According to the World Health Organization, nearly half of the world’s population is now at risk of Dengue. This is a powerful reminder that we must stay proactive in safeguarding our health.”
Dato’ Dr. Musa Mohd Nordin, a paediatrician at KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital, in his talk titled “Merdeka and Dengue”, urged all eligible individuals over 4 years old to consider taking the dengue vaccine, which has been shown to reduce the risk of contracting dengue and decreases the risk of hospitalisation by 84%. There have been no major adverse effects associated with the dengue vaccine.”
Madam Sherin Tan, whose two children received the vaccine, remarked, “I know many people who have suffered severely from dengue fever. With this vaccine, I hope no more children will have to endure the pain of dengue.”
The event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including Professor Dato’ Dr. Azizi Haji Omar, Member of the Board of Directors & Group Medical Advisor of KPJ Healthcare Berhad; Madam Hoo Ling Lee, Regional Chief Executive Officer (RCEO) of KPJ Healthcare Berhad; Dr. Nur Abdul Karim, Medical Director of KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital; Puan Sharian Hussain, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital; Mr. Sony Paul, Head of Franchise, Vaccines Malaysia and Singapore (Takeda), along with members of the hospital community and the public.

The audience was also treated to a performance by the Senior Citizens Club Subang Jaya Symphony Choir (SCCSJ Symphony Choir), who performed “Jiwa Merdeka.” This stirring performance not only celebrated Malaysia’s independence but also highlighted the unity and resilience required in the ongoing fight against dengue.
The event featured various interactive booths designed to educate and empower the community. The Dengue Prevention booth offered practical advice on controlling mosquito populations, while other booths provided valuable health-related information and raised awareness.

KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital remains committed to leading community health initiatives and will continue to collaborate with local groups to enhance public health education.
