How often would you get the chance to experience the world of health care in a real hospital setting? Not very often, that’s for sure.
But with the Dr Little First Aid Bootcamp close to 50 children from the Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur Dr Little Club had the amazing opportunity to learn and explore being a doctor for a day while taking home knowledge that might just save a life.

Dr Little Club by Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur was launched last year and the activities organised by the club are highly anticipated by its members and their parents. This time, kids 7 to 10 years old had the opportunity to learn basic skills on first aid and emergencies, mentored by established specialist doctors through the First Aid Bootcamp on the 28th April 2019.

One of the topics presented was ‘Safety First’ by Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Azam B. Mohd Nor. He spoke to the kids about safety around the house and in school, including do’s and don’ts when they’re at home alone, while they’re in school waiting for their parents, or how to react when a stranger approaches and so on. Dr Uma Sothinathan, Consultant Paediatrician, on the other hand, spoke on medical emergencies like what to do when someone gets injured or when a sibling chokes on something.

Our children, if taught what to do, will know what to do.” – Dr Uma Sothinathan, Consultant Paediatrician
What made this event great was also the hands-on activities with Dr Mohammed Ridzuan Abdul Razak, Senior Resident Medical officer, Emergency Department at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and his team. Kids were taught the proper way to wash their hands- a key step in preventing illnesses and infections, and also learnt how to clean wounds. Another basic first aid skill that was taught during the bootcamp is how to tie an arm sling. An arm sling is important to protect your shoulder, elbow, wrist or arm in general while healing by limiting arm movement. Besides this, the kids were also given a chance to perform CPR on a mannequin. This basic CPR training was not only useful for the kids, but great info and skill for mummies and daddies that accompanied the kids to the bootcamp.

A highlight for many of the kids was the chance to visit a real ambulance. They were given the opportunity to explore the inside of the ambulance itself and getting to know the essential tools and equipment that every ambulance should have.

Overall, it was an informative and interactive event that put a smile on all of the faces of the kids and guardian present for the bootcamp.
