Q: Is there such a thing as overdose of vitamins/nutrients in children? (more and more food/drinks are being fortified with all sorts of vitamins/minerals, etc.)

Children need to consume food that are rich in essential vitamins and minerals in order to keep their bodies functioning properly. While most multivitamins are safe if taken in the recommended dosage, they are drugs nonetheless. Overdose in small children is always a concern.
There have been cases where children are treated in emergency rooms due to accidental supplement overdose. Children are not fully developed, hence they respond differently compared to adults who may consume more than the recommended vitamin dosage.
Over-the-counter supplements for children are generally safe when taken according to the recommended dosage. If the vitamins or supplements are not kept out of reach, children may be tempted by the chewable “treats” and mistaken it for a candy. Some of the symptoms for children when consuming too much vitamins can include nausea, vomiting, rashes, headache, diarrhoea or stomach cramps.
