Q: What is the best solution for thrush in babies?
Answered By: Dr Ganesarasa A/L Annarasa, Paediatrician, Pantai Hospital Klang (PHK)
Thrush is an overgrowth of a yeast called Candida Albicans. Good bacteria and Fungi / Yeast are normally present in our body, keeping each other in check (Balanced). Sometimes an overgrowth happens, usually following antibiotic usage. Babies are particularly prone as their immune system is not fully mature.
It can happen in the mouth or on skin particularly nappy area.
Treatment involves keeping area clean and dry. In the mouth, tongue and inner cheeks can be cleaned gently using hanky on little finger or soft baby toothbrushes.
Baby will also need anti-Fungal creams for skin or drops in the mouth.
