Empowering Expecting Parents for Their Newborn Baby (Workshop-Parenthood Prep 2.0)

Following the success of the first Parenthood Prep in January this year, Parenthood in collaboration with Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur organized the workshop for the second time last August with the aim to prep new parents and parents-to-be with the knowledge to care for themselves and their baby.

The full-day workshop, which saw close to 100 participants in attendance, covered about 8 must-know topics that are essential for any parent and parent-to-be. It is considered one of the most hands-on and interactive workshop that caters to millennial parents in this era.

Some of the main topics that were covered during this workshop include childbirth preparation, an emergency guide to choking, baby bathing Basics together with baby Massage, nutrition and breastfeeding.

 

Childbirth Preparation

To kick start the morning, Dr Vijay, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist from Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur presented a talk on some of the things that parents should know about labour and delivery. From birth positions to knowing what to expect, Dr Vijay also answered numerous questions that were on parents mind at the time.

 

Emergency Guide to Choking

As baby grows and become more curious with their surroundings, chances of choking are also higher. Preparing parents for an emergency situation like this may help save lives. Ms Rabiatun Adawiah, an expert in first aid explained on the precise steps a person should take when a child chokes – be it on milk, food, toys or any other object. A step-by-step demo was presented during the workshop to ensure parents would know what to so if ever the situation was to arise.

 

Baby Bathing Basics & Baby Massage

Bathing a baby may seem like a no-brainer task, but in fact, it may be a little different when cleaning your baby especially in the early days of birth. Ms Lim Seng Keat, Nurse Manager, Nursery & NICU of Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur gave a full step-by-step guide on bathing a newborn and proceeded to teach parents present ways to massage their baby after that luke warm bath. Massages not only soothes baby and help them sleep better, but it also improves weight gain, aid digestion and improves blood circulation.

 

Breastfeeding

Another highlight of the day, was the breastfeeding sharing session conducted by Ms Elpeni Bt Ramli, Certified Lactation Counsellor at Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur. Panellist included Dr Tengku Nur Atiqah, Lactation Counsellor and Founder of Bondahaven – Malaysia’s first breastfeeding spa and Mr Muhammad Noor B Zakaria, who shared his experience as a husband supporting his wife in her journey of fully breastfeeding their children aged three and one.

Understanding Newborn Skin by dermatologist Dr Chang Choong Char

Nutrition during Pregnancy and Confinement by dietitian Ng Siau Chian.

The Importance of Cord Blood Banking by CryoCord

Other topics that were discussed include Understanding Newborn Skin by dermatologist Dr Chang Choong Char, Nutrition during Pregnancy and Confinement by Ng Siau Chian who is a dietician, as well as The Importance of Cord Blood Banking by CryoCord.
