Dr Little First Aid Bootcamp 2.0

Dr Little First Aid Bootcamp 2.0

Does your child aspire to be in the medical line when they grow up? Or are you thinking of having them experience what’s it like to be a doctor, a nurse or a medical officer in a real hospital setting? Recently, Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur hosted their yearly Dr Little First Aid Bootcamp with 40 children from the Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur Dr Little Club. Children had the amazing opportunity to learn and explore being a doctor for a day while taking home knowledge that might just save a life.

Every year, this Dr Little Club event is one of the most anticipated events that members look forward to. This time, kids 6 to 10 years old had the opportunity to learn basic skills of first aid and emergencies, mentored by an established doctor from Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

The topic of ‘First Aid Trauma’ was presented by Dr Mohammed Ridzuan Abdul Razak, Senior Resident Medical Officer, Emergency Department at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He spoke to the kids about safety around the house and in school, including do’s and don’ts when they’re at home, while they’re in school waiting for their parents, as well as first aid tips during an emergency.

What‘s great about the bootcamp were the hands-on activities that kids absolutely love. Participants were taught the proper way to wash their hands- a key step in preventing illnesses and infections, and also learnt the proper way to clean wounds. Another basic first aid skill that was taught during the bootcamp was on how to tie an arm sling. An arm sling is important to protect an injured shoulder, elbow, wrist or arm in general by limiting arm movement.

Another highlight of the bootcamp was the basic CPR training by Dr Ridzuan and his team. Kids were taught how to perform CPR using a CPR training dummy that was provided. CPR training is useful in a cardiac emergency or drowning incident. The basic CPR training was not only useful for the kids, but great info and skill for mummies and daddies that accompanied the kids to the bootcamp.

A favourite for the majority of the kids was the chance to visit a real ambulance, where the First Ambulance at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur explained on the pre-hospital care they can perform at the emergency scene and in the ambulance for life-saving situations. Kids were also given a full tour of the ambulance, including all the tools and equipment that is a must-have in every ambulance.

Overall, it was an informative and interactive event that put a smile on all of the faces of the kids and guardians present for the bootcamp. We know that these little doctors just can’t wait to be part of the next Dr Little Club event and you can too!
