As companies continue to innovate to keep up with the modernising world, traditional practices are being put aside to make way for new-age tools and technology that can increase efficiency and productivity.

This applies to multiple sectors including the education industry. With virtual learning becoming essential amid the ongoing pandemic, teachers are now embracing technology to ensure that students continue to receive the best possible education from afar. With that in mind, Japan-based Education Tech (EdTech) company, SoroTouch, is introducing a revolutionary tech-based method for children to learn Mathematics.

Established in 2016 by former Director of Rakuten Belanja Online, Yasunobu Hashimoto, SoroTouch has since been improving on the 2000-year-old abacus method to introduce and build passion towards mental calculation in children.

Having won the prestigious Circle of Excellence Award from Microsoft at the age of 24, Hashimoto-san then transferred to Rakuten and was appointed the Director of Rakuten Belanja Online in Indonesia. Despite the language barrier, he made full use of the common language of numbers in commerce to communicate with his colleagues during his tenure. This further cemented his positive affirmation towards mathematics and numeracy.

Upon becoming a father, Hashimoto-san noticed that arithmetic is commonly the least favourite subject among elementary school students not only in Japan but also in other parts of the world, including Malaysia. Realising that the root cause of this is that students are unfamiliar with calculations, he started SoroTouch to develop children’s ability to calculate in an enjoyable and efficient manner. To bring this technology to Malaysia, SoroTouch formed a partnership with local EdTech company, Ai Tech House in 2019 to act as their exclusive provider in the country.

Since its inception, SoroTouch has won the 2017 Japan e-Learning Grand Prix Grand Prize and the Kids Design Award in the following year. Today, SoroTouch’s syllabus has been localised into eight different languages and is made available in eight countries – Malaysia, Japan, China, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Singapore, Indonesia and the United States.
