Kids’ bedrooms and playrooms are perfect for makeovers, because where else in your home can you unleash your creativity and use such vivid colours? Furthermore, the colours and designs in a kid’s bedroom play a role in nurturing their creativity and imagination, and will need to change over time to keep pace with their development, as they continue to grow and move into different phases of their life.

In this article, we’re sharing tips to design and redecorate your family playroom and kid’s room! So if you think that your kid’s room or the family playroom needs a little spruce, then you’re in luck because we’ve got all the tips to help you with a room makeover. You will also learn how to pair colours with designs that will stimulate your kid’s mental and physical development.

MAKEOVER TIPS

  • For kids, PLAY is serious business. It is during playtime and through socialising with others that they experiment and learn to observe the world. As the cognitive, physical, social and mental well-being of kids is important, we should create a dedicated space for them to create, build and pretend.

  • A kids’ room or playroom is often a world of wonder for kids, why not design it in such a way that is fun and welcoming?

  • Don’t be afraid to go for bright and colourful colours, as they are beneficial to their behavioural and cognitive growth. Various colours of the spectrum can also boost a child’s creative mindset, thus enabling a positive experience during their growth journey.

  • Get creative with paint! Take it a step further and try painting the furniture in the room too – this is also a great activity to do with your kid! Remember to choose paint that is child-friendly, odourless, has superior washability and low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

  • Maximise all the spaces as this will only open up the floor for playtime!

  • Just because your kids share the same bedroom, it doesn’t mean that they have to share the same bedding or even furniture! It’s important to allow kids to express their creativity and personality, so let them pick out their own designs and furniture. Who knows, you might be impressed with their final masterpiece!

  • Re-create the walls! Walls are the biggest surfaces at home and kids rely heavily on them during play (i.e. learning to walk, unleashing their creativity by drawing on the walls), so don’t be afraid to extend your designs and creativity beyond decorative items, and start thinking about making over the walls too!

  • Use stencils with galaxy or unicorn designs to cheer up the entire space!

Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun with your kids during the entire makeover process!

Here are some amazing makeover inspirations that is sure to make your little one happy.

Playroom

  • For this particular playroom, it’s all about bringing to life a kid’s favourite past time in the safety and comfort of their own rooms.
  • The race tracks on the wall can also double as train tracks – allowing the kid to use their imagination to create their very own storylines!

Boy’s Room

  • The focus of the transformation of this room is all about creating a conducive environment for the kid to excel in, by using colours that promote study performance and imagination.
  • The use of stencils are also a great and creative way to add character to the room!

Girl’s Room

Q&A With Datin Wong Meng Lee, Assistant General Manager, Marketing, Nippon Paint Malaysia

1. How does paint relate to the health and wellness of children?

A study that we conducted found that 80% of young children from infant stage spend time indoors. According to the Malaysian Society of Allergy & Immunology (MSAI), air pollutants are higher indoors than outdoors, resulting in more than 50% of premature deaths due to pneumonia among children under 5.

Causes include poorly ventilated rooms, pesticides, tobacco smoke, biological pollutants such as fungi, mould, Volatile Organic Compounds, Formaldehyde, and other gases. With a strong emphasis in Research & Development initiatives, we at Nippon Paint stay ahead of the pack to be the first mover in offering sustainable coatings by ensuring that its ‘Green Choice Series’ and ‘Child Wellness Range’ products are water- based, near-zero VOC, absent of lead and mercury, and contains elements of anti-virus and anti-bacteria properties.

2. What are some coatings innovations that will provide children with a healthier indoor environment?

Parents need to understand that walls are one of the largest surfaces in a home, and that 88% of parents admitted to overlooking it as a medium of transmission of viruses and bacteria.

In one of our research, 86% confessed that they do not clean their walls as often as floors. As naturally curious beings, children tend to touch surfaces around them (i.e. when they learn to crawl or walk).

Hence, paint with functional properties such as anti-viral and bacterial, anti-allergen, and has superior washability helps to maintain optimum indoor air quality.
