As the season of giving approaches, there’s lots of things to think about, such as, what gifts to buy, where to shop, how to decorate the house and Christmas meals preps.
Nevertheless, in this unprecedented time, things are not going to be easy for many families economically.
With the number of COVID-19 cases lately, jobs cut, and movement restrictions, how can we celebrate Christmas minimally without breaking our wallet while making our family happy as well?
Check these practical saving tips that will help make your Christmas more meaningful than ever.
1. Set Your Priorities

Before you start spending, make a list of everything you need this year. Start with what’s most important when it comes to celebrating Christmas –Is it hosting a party? Decorations? Or gifts?
Strike out unnecessary things that don’t really matter, and focus on what really makes Christmas meaningful.
2. Minimise Number of Christmas Presents

Buying gifts for your kids can be fun and tempting at the same time. As parents, we tend to go overboard with purchases, especially with all those Christmas promotions going on. Before you know it, you have 2 gifts for one child and would have to even it out by buying another for your other kids.
To avoid temptations, follow the rule of one gift for each child only and really ask yourself if your child really needs that item.
3. A Quiet Celebration

If you are used to visiting your family every year, this Christmas may not be the same. Since the pandemic is not over yet, the best is to stay home and stay safe. Organizing fun games or competitions is a great way to share some joy with those close to you while remaining safe.
In a way, the pandemic forces us to slow down, simplify, and re-focus on what’s best for our family. Don’t you agree?
4. Reuse or Recycle Christmas Decorations

Instead of buying new ornaments, why not reuse the ones you have by mixing them up to create a new theme or look. You can even DIY your own new ornaments with the kids by upcycling things around the house.
Your children’s mini toys or figurines can also be used to hang on the tree and in their rooms. Simply add a string to them to hang up and add some festive lights to make any space look Christmassy. Your kids will surely approve too!
5. Plan Your Meals

Make a rule of buying no additional food unless you have used everything you already have at home. Plan your meals around them – you might come up with interesting combinations and new flavours. Everything is within your fingertips. Just google for more new recipe ideas. You can totally cook your usual dishes for Christmas, but with a slight variation in the presentation.
Another way to save your pocket is by cutting out dishes that are the least favourite, and just focus on one appetizer, one main dish, and one dessert instead of having a variety of dishes to indulge in.
6. DIY your Wrapping Paper or Gift Tags

If you really want to commit to spending less this year, consider every coin you can save and be ready to spend a little more time making things. You can sit together with your children and do some DIY wrapping papers, by simply getting plain paper, colour them with some nice Christmas themed patterns.
Make gift tags in the same way as making Christmas cards with scraps of card, paper, stickers, and glitter. Use the skills you’re best at.
7. Save Money By Buying New Clothes Online

One great way to save money on your Christmas shopping budget is to shop and order online. Be sure to start ordering early and expect the delivery closer to your desired date. You can also wait until certain items are on sale rather than buying everything last minute at full price.
Needless to say, shopping at a physical store can be much more expensive and time-consuming, so you’ll be saving money and valuable time from travelling to the mall as well. Start ordering online if you haven’t already and save some money from your budgeted list.
Finally, enjoy Christmas your way – Amidst the pandemic, many are suffering silently with so many less fortunate people out there who are longing for some help.
Why not help out by identifying these families and start giving a little from what you have to the people who really need it?
You can do so by choosing a family or two to provide some essential needs to them such as rice, flour, cookies, and milk.
By doing so, you’re not only helping to lighten their burden, but you’ll also be spreading happiness.
There are a lot of items that aren’t needed and are unnecessary during Christmas time.
Save your money during Christmas celebrations this year and have a simple, minimal Christmas that is still meaningful to you and your family.
