Post-birth or postpartum swelling is common and is the residual effect of the extra fluid retained by the body during pregnancy.

It may also be aggravated by the mother’s position and pushing during labour as well as the sedentary lifestyle soon after delivery.

The swelling usually subsides within a week after delivery.

However, it is important to watch out for unusual swelling. Unequal swelling or swelling confined to one leg may indicate deep vein thrombosis or a blood clot.

Besides that, excessive swelling may also be a sign of preeclampsia, which is associated with high blood pressure. Deep vein thrombosis and preeclampsia require immediate medical attention.
