Art lovers heading to George Town have a new exhibition to add to their list.
British artist Thomas Powell, who is based in Penang, is currently presenting his latest solo exhibition, Up In The Air, at Cultprint in George Town until 6 December 2026.
Inspired by Malaysia’s recurring haze, changing weather patterns and growing uncertainty around the climate, economy and politics, the exhibition explores the feeling that much of the world today remains, quite literally, “up in the air”.

Through original artworks and mixed-media installations, Powell brings together unexpected objects, imagery and perspectives to reflect on how human decisions shape the systems and environments around us.
Rather than offering predictions about what comes next, the exhibition invites visitors to pause and consider questions around sustainability, consumption and the choices we make for the future.
“I’m not predicting collapse,” Powell shares. “I’m wondering whether a period of unusual weather is a useful reminder to become a little more prepared, a little less wasteful, and a little more connected to the systems that keep us comfortable.”

Powell works across painting, printmaking, sculpture, found materials and digital imagery, drawing inspiration from history, science, philosophy and everyday life.
Up In The Air is showing at:
