For several Malaysian families, this year’s Merdeka Day came with an extra special reason to celebrate.
Babies born on 31 August 2026 at participating Columbia Asia Hospitals were welcomed as Malaysia marked its 69th Independence Day, with eligible newborns also receiving a RM1,000 contribution towards their savings.
The contribution is part of The HeadStart Initiative, introduced under Columbia Asia’s Care Beyond Birth campaign in collaboration with Hong Leong Bank (HLB).
Launched in conjunction with Columbia Asia’s 30th anniversary, the initiative aims to give parents an early starting point for building savings for their child.
A Merdeka Day to Remember
For Ahmad Asyroor bin Mohd Kamil and Norhaniza Binti Mohamad Osman, Merdeka Day 2026 will always carry an added significance.
Their baby boy was born at Columbia Asia Hospital Puchong at 10.37am, making his arrival part of the nationwide Merdeka Day celebrations.
“Celebrating the babies on Merdeka Day with The HeadStart Initiative made the day even more special for all of us at Columbia Asia,” said Norhaniza.
“It’s a meaningful way for us to start saving for the babies’ future, and hopefully the savings will grow as we go through milestones together.”
Eligible Malaysian babies born at participating Columbia Asia Hospitals that day qualified for a RM1,000 contribution to an HLB 3-in-1 Junior Account.
Care That Continues Beyond Childbirth
The Care Beyond Birth campaign is part of Columbia Asia’s 30th anniversary celebrations under the theme, “30 Years of Care. A Lifetime of Trust. Right Here for You.”
The campaign reflects the healthcare group’s aim to support families not only during pregnancy and childbirth, but through the stages that come after bringing a baby home.
“For us, 30 years has really been about being there for Malaysian families through some of the moments that matter most. Welcoming a baby is certainly one of those special moments,” said Lee Hui Chuen, Regional Chief Executive Officer of Columbia Asia.
“With Care Beyond Birth, we wanted to build on that commitment and continue supporting families as they begin this new chapter.”
Becoming a parent can also change the way families think about the years ahead. Beyond navigating feeds, nappies and sleepless nights, parents may find themselves thinking about healthcare, education and financial planning for their child.
The HeadStart Initiative offers these families a simple way to begin.
Helping Parents Start Saving Early
Through the collaboration, Columbia Asia’s experience in supporting families is paired with Hong Leong Bank’s financial expertise to encourage parents to establish good saving habits from their child’s earliest years.
“With 120 years of rooted heritage in Malaysia, Hong Leong Bank has always dedicated itself to empowering generations of Malaysians toward long-term financial goals and stability,” said Galvin Yeo, General Manager, Personal Financial Services – Deposits & Digital at Hong Leong Bank.
“Welcoming Columbia Asia Hospitals’ Merdeka Day babies with their first savings account marks the beginning of a lifelong relationship with smart financial habits, helping parents lay a strong foundation for their child’s future.”
Following the babies’ births, Columbia Asia and HLB will assist eligible parents in opening an HLB 3-in-1 Junior Account, with the RM1,000 contribution then deposited into the account.
Growing Up With Columbia Kids Club
The Merdeka Day newborns will also receive another benefit available to babies born at Columbia Asia Hospitals.
They will automatically be registered as members of the Columbia Kids Club, which offers families selected privileges such as hospital discounts and invitations to children’s outings and activities.
Through Care Beyond Birth, Columbia Asia hopes to remain part of families’ journeys beyond those first days with a newborn and as their children continue to grow.
For the parents celebrating a new arrival this Merdeka Day, the RM1,000 contribution may be just the first step. But it is also an early reminder that planning for a child’s future can begin from day one.
