Every parent has seen it happen.
A child who scores well on exams suddenly freezes when asked to present in front of the class. A student who knows all the right answers stays silent when the teacher asks a question. A bright teenager struggles through a scholarship interview, unable to express what they know or who they are.
It can be frustrating to watch because the knowledge is clearly there, and yet, success today is rarely determined by knowledge alone. Academic results still matter. They open important doors to schools, universities and opportunities. But beyond that first door, something else often determines how far a person goes: the ability to communicate clearly, speak with confidence and connect with people.
Confidence Is a Skill, Not a Personality Trait
Just like the old saying goes, “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.” Confidence built in childhood often becomes the foundation for success in adulthood, which is why these skills are easiest and most effective to nurture during childhood and adolescence.
Between the ages of five and seventeen, children are constantly forming habits, developing self-belief and learning how to interact with the world around them. The earlier they learn to express themselves confidently, the more naturally those skills become part of who they are.
Unfortunately, this is an area that many children do not receive enough exposure to in traditional classrooms. While schools do an excellent job of teaching academic subjects, opportunities to develop public speaking, presentation skills and confident self-expression are often limited.
As a result, many students can:
- Solve complex problems on paper
- Score highly in examinations
- Complete assignments successfully
Yet, struggle to communicate their ideas in front of others.
A Comprehensive Approach to Confidence
Recognising this need, MicFront Public Speaking has spent the past decade helping young Malaysians develop confidence through public speaking and communication training. Recently recognised as a winner of the Parents’ Choice Awards 2026 for the Best Public Speaking School and Best Public Speaking Programme Award, MicFront has built a reputation for equipping children and teenagers with practical communication skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Founded in 2017 by Mas Mahathir, the World No.2 and No.3 Public Speaking Winner (WCPS 2025, 2022) and Dr Jolynn Ch’ng, a PhD holder in Personality Development and a Licensed Counsellor, MicFront started with one mission: to help children find their voice and actually use it. Today, that mission reaches families across the country through a growing network of 18 outlets, plus 1 outlet in the Maldives, making confidence-building programmes accessible to more children than ever before.

Central to that mission is MicFront’s signature teaching methodology, developed by Mas Mahathir and Dr Jolynn Ch’ng themselves. It is the only public speaking programme in Malaysia that combines three disciplines in one framework:
- Public Speaking: the technique, structure and delivery skills that give a child command of the room
- Psychology: the confidence-building layer that addresses how a child sees herself as a speaker
- Counselling: the emotional tools that help children move past the fear of being heard
Together, these three pillars make the “from shy to stage” transformation not just possible, but lasting. A child who freezes at the front of the class is rarely struggling with vocabulary. More often, it’s self-doubt, the quiet sense that her voice isn’t worth hearing. Technique alone cannot fix that.
What Parents Should Be Looking For
If you are considering a public speaking programme for your child, look beyond the performance. Ask whether the programme builds genuine confidence or just performance confidence. Ask whether coaches are trained consistently across outlets. Ask whether the curriculum addresses the emotional and developmental layers of communication, not just the mechanics of it.
MicFront’s flagship event, the Largest Public Speaking Event in Malaysia (LPSE), held on 4 and 5 July, did exactly what it set out to do. With over 1,000 participants taking the stage, the event officially entered the Malaysian Book of Records as the largest public speaking event ever held in the country.
For the students who stood up that day, it was something a classroom cannot fully replicate: a real stage, a live audience, and the moment when everything built over months of training- the structure, the composure, the quiet belief that their voice belongs there- finally counted for real.
True eloquence is the ultimate gift of self-belief. When a child learns that their voice is welcomed, their entire trajectory changes. They stop shrinking from opportunities and begin stepping into them.
