Just when you’ve paid the childcare fees, your child needs new school shoes. Then there are groceries, medical appointments and perhaps the cost of caring for ageing parents. Raising a family means juggling expenses that rarely arrive one at a time, so a little financial breathing room can make a real difference.
Malaysia’s Budget 2027, tabled on 9 October 2026, includes several measures that could help ease that pressure, from higher school assistance to expanded tax relief and support for new mums and older loved ones. Even your furry family members get a mention.
We’ve broken down the announcements into categories so you can find the support most relevant to your household.
For Parents: Help With Everyday Expenses
From grocery shopping to enrichment classes, here’s what could help with the family’s expenses:
- SARA of up to RM150 monthly: Eligible Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) recipients will receive this assistance, with the combined STR and SARA allocation rising to RM16 billion.
- RM100 twice through SARA MADANI: Malaysians aged 18 and above outside STR will receive payments before Aidilfitri and ahead of Merdeka.
- More fresh-food options: SARA purchases will extend to fresh produce at 216 FAMA pasar tani and tamu.
- Higher personal tax relief: The limit increases from RM9,000 to RM12,000.
- Relief for children’s classes: Up to RM2,000 for qualifying STEM, arts, language and religious classes or tuition, within the overall RM7,000 education and skills relief.
- Higher minimum wage: From June 2027, the minimum wage will rise from RM1,700 to RM2,000 a month, subject to the announced exemptions for qualifying smaller businesses.
Remember, tax relief reduces your taxable income. It is not a cash payment or a full refund of what you spend.

For Women and Mums: Support Beyond Delivery Day
Anyone who has welcomed a baby knows that support matters long after leaving the hospital. The announcements include:
- Postnatal care relief: Up to RM3,000 for qualifying services.
- Breastfeeding equipment relief: Up to RM1,000 for children aged two and below. Both this and postnatal care fall within the RM10,000 health and wellbeing relief limit.
- Longer maternity leave for civil servants: Up to 98 days per birth, within a career total of 490 days.
- Better workplace childcare: RM20 million allocated to improving childcare facilities at government premises.
- Fertility treatment support: Subsidised IUI treatment through BuAI expanded to approximately 2,000 couples.
- Support for single mothers: KasihnITa will reach 7,000 single mothers, including legal and psychosocial assistance.
For Children: School Costs and More Inclusive Support
Back-to-school shopping can quickly add up. Alongside financial assistance, Budget 2027 includes plans to expand learning and developmental support:
- RM200 back-to-school assistance: Bantuan Awal Persekolahan increases from RM150 to RM200 per pupil.
- Supplementary school meals: The programme will support approximately 800,000 pupils.
- Form Six living allowance: RM2,500 announced to help with study-related expenses. This is not a monthly payment.
- Higher special-education allowance: The pupil allowance rises from RM150 to RM200 monthly.
- More autism services: Plans include 132 new Tunas Istimewa@KEMAS classes and new Permata Kurnia centres in Melaka and Pahang.
- Specialised Down syndrome therapy: 15 community rehabilitation centres will be upgraded to provide these services.
Families seeking additional support should watch for updates as implementation details become available.
For Senior Citizens: Supporting Our Parents, Too
Many parents are raising children while caring for their own mum and dad. These measures address both financial support and caregiving:
- Bantuan Warga Emas: RM1.3 billion allocated to benefit almost 200,000 recipients. This is the total programme funding, not an individual payment.
- Monthly EPF withdrawals: The proposed i-Emas option lets members reaching 55 or 60 choose monthly withdrawals while their remaining savings keep earning dividends.
- Broader caregiving tax relief: The existing RM8,000 parent and grandparent relief expands to include general caregiving expenses, subject to documentation requirements.
A Little Bonus for Pawrents
Your furry family members get a mention, too. The proposed lifestyle tax relief expansion includes:
- Pet adoption costs from registered animal shelters.
- Vaccinations and neutering through registered veterinary services.

These expenses fall within the existing RM2,500 lifestyle relief limit, not an additional allowance. With so much going towards caring for everyone else, it’s worth making sure your family receives the support available.
