Every parent’s nightmare is knowing their child has swallowed something dangerous, especially when that something is small enough to go unnoticed.

Coin lithium batteries may be tiny, but they can pose a serious risk if swallowed. Found in everyday items such as remote controls, key fobs, tracking tags, and toys, these little batteries can become lodged in a child’s oesophagus and cause internal burns in as little as 15 minutes.

Now, Energizer Malaysia is taking on that risk by launching its new Energizer® Ultimate Child Shield™ coin lithium batteries in Malaysia. Available in 2032, 2025 and 2016 sizes, the batteries are designed to prevent burns if swallowed, adding an extra layer of protection to one of those everyday household items parents may not think twice about.

And this is not a risk parents can simply brush aside. More than 3,500 coin lithium battery ingestion incidents are reported in the US each year, with children aged six and below accounting for most cases. Incidents have also risen nine-fold over the past decade as more everyday devices turn to 20mm coin lithium batteries for power.

The size of these batteries is part of the problem. At around 20mm in diameter, they are similar in size to a young child’s oesophagus, which means they can become lodged if swallowed. Once stuck, a battery can cause serious internal burns in as little as 15 minutes and potentially life-threatening injuries within a few hours.

What makes these incidents even more worrying is that the signs may not always be obvious. A child may show no symptoms at all, while symptoms that do appear can easily be mistaken for something less serious. If a child is suspected of swallowing a coin lithium battery, immediate medical attention is critical.
