Don’t Be A Parent That Crushes Dreams: Here’s How You Can Support Your Child In Whatever They Want To Be When They Grow Up

Remember when you were a child? What did you want to be when you grow up? A race car driver? An astronaut? A dancer? A vetenarian? We all had dreams that go unrealised, goals we didn’t meet, but that shouldn’t turn us into dream-crushing parents.

As parents, we have the power to kill or build up our childrens’ dreams.

A lot of us tend to be practical and focus on reality instead of possibilities. But as children filled with optimism, kids believe that anything is possible and options for their future are only limited by their imagination. So, what if we dream like our children dream and support them in their endeavours?

Here are some ways you can support your child in whatever they want to be when they grow up.

Don’t tell them they’re not good enough

Psychologically speaking, telling your child that they’re not good enough for something will only hurt and discourage them. Even if your child gets C’s for math but wants to be an engineer or rocket scientist, never discount the possibility. If your child wants to be a singer but sounds like a broken record, then sign her up for vocal lessons.

Don’t be an obstacle in their path

The world has its own challenges stacked against your child’s dream, so don’t be one of them. Our job as parents is to provide the proper skills, education and encouragement. It’s important to that we don’t mix up our dreams for them with their own dreams. We all have/had our own dreams, so our children deserve their own as well.

Encourage extra-curricular activities in school

Extra-curricular activities are a great way to encourage their dreams to be a reality. Not only will they learn skills in the line that they are interested in, it’ll also build up their confidence and social skills as well. For example, if your child wants to go into medicine, let them join the Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah, or if their dream is to be a hero and save lives they can join in the Kadet Bomba dan Penyelamat Club.

Take Amber Chia for example, although Amber is a famous model and even has her own academy, she doesn’t force her child to follow in her footsteps. Amber’s son wants to be a gamer/streamer when he grows up. As a parent, Amber is committed to supporting him to achieve his dream, while not neglecting his studies and sports.

“Every mum wants her child to grow up in happiness, and i’ll support him in terms of intellectual and mental healthiness,” she says.

Be open about your own dreams

Yes, grown ups have dreams too! Be open about what your dreams were at their age and discuss how it became a reality or why it didn’t happen and lessons you’ve learnt along the way. Children are smart and much more understanding than we presume.

Support them with your actions and time

Whether it’s for a football game, a choir concert or chess competition, nothing says support more than your actions and the time that you spend supporting their dreams. That means, ferrying them around for their extra-curricular activities, lugging around their equipment, preparing healthy meals or getting them the best quality uniforms such as the ones from Professor for their co-curriculum. Remember, our small actions can make a big impact in the life and journey towards their dream.

Parents who wore Professor uniforms often buy the brand for their children.

Just like our local hero, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor. He is Malaysia’s first astronaut, but he is also an orthopaedic surgeon. He hopes his children will follow in his and his wife’s footsteps to become doctors in the future. He chooses Professor as the best quality uniform for his children, just like how he wore Professor school uniform during his school days.

Long-Lasting, Durable & Premium School Uniforms

The humble school uniform is part of every child’s life experience. It’s what they wear everyday as they play, grow and learn valuable skills that will shape them as individuals later on. School life can be tough, but students and parents have one less thing to worry about with the right school uniform that fits well, lasts long, and looks good.
