A Taste of Home: Rediscovering Malaysian Flavours with Thermomix®

Ask any Malaysian about their favourite food and chances are, the answer comes with a story. It could be the apam balik bought after school, satay shared during a family gathering, a comforting bowl of nasi ulam or a cup of teh tarik enjoyed at the neighbourhood mamak. For many of us, Malaysian food is never simply about what is on the plate. It is about the people we share it with, the places we grew up in and the little moments that stay with us long after the meal is over.

This sense of nostalgia takes centre stage in Thermomix® Malaysia’s new Malaysian Flavours Collection, created in collaboration with Thermomix® Malaysia Ambassador Chef Sid Murshid. Inspired by Sid’s own childhood memories growing up in Muar, Johor, the collection brings together familiar Malaysian favourites with a contemporary touch.

The collection was unveiled during an immersive culinary experience at the Thermomix® Experience Store in Bangsar, where members of the media and content creators had the opportunity to taste and experience the recipes firsthand.

From Childhood Memories to the Dinner Table

For Sid, the collection is deeply personal. Growing up in Muar, he was surrounded by the sights, sounds and aromas of Malaysian food culture from bustling weekend markets and roadside stalls to family meals that brought everyone around the table.

Those memories became the inspiration behind several recipes in the collection, including Apam Balik and Lamb Satay. There is something wonderfully familiar about apam balik: crispy edges, a soft centre and that unmistakable combination of sweet and nutty flavours. Satay, meanwhile, needs little introduction to Malaysians: smoky, aromatic and almost always better when enjoyed with good company. Rather than simply recreating these dishes, Sid uses them as a way to revisit the food memories that shaped his journey as a chef.

Recipes Made for Sharing

Food has always played a starring role in Malaysian celebrations, and the collection also pays tribute to the dishes that make gatherings feel complete. Ayam Percik and Nasi Ulam are two such examples.

Rich with spices and fragrant herbs, these dishes capture the spirit of communal dining, the kind where food is passed around, conversations stretch on, and nobody seems quite ready to leave the table. It is this sense of togetherness that makes Malaysian cuisine so special. Different cultures, ingredients and cooking traditions come together on one table, creating a food identity that is distinctly our own.

When Familiar Flavours Get a Modern Twist

Not every recipe in the collection is a traditional dish in its original form. Take Teh Tarik Crème Brûlée, for example. The humble teh tarik is a familiar part of everyday Malaysian life, whether it is enjoyed over breakfast, during an afternoon catch-up or alongside a late-night mamak meal. Here, its comforting tea and creamy notes are transformed into an elegant dessert, proof that nostalgic flavours can take on an entirely new personality without losing the connection to home.

There is also the Pandan Coconut Frappe, which brings together two much-loved local ingredients in a refreshing, contemporary drink. Together, these recipes reflect an interesting side of Malaysian cuisine: it can honour where we come from while still leaving room to experiment.

Making Malaysian Cooking More Approachable

At the heart of the experience was the Thermomix® TM7, the latest addition to the brand’s all-in-one smart cooking system. Through live cooking demonstrations, guests saw how the TM7 can assist with different stages of preparing Malaysian dishes from making rempah from scratch to blending, steaming and slow-cooking.

For home cooks, this can take some of the guesswork out of recipes that might otherwise feel time-consuming or intimidating. The guided cooking experience on Cookidoo® also provides step-by-step instructions, allowing cooks of different skill levels to follow along and recreate dishes with greater confidence and consistency.

“Malaysian cuisine is one of the country’s greatest treasures, and we are honoured to celebrate it through this meaningful collaboration with Chef Sid,” said Christine Wong, General Manager of Vorwerk Singapore and Malaysia.

The Malaysian Flavours Collection reflects our shared passion for preserving culinary traditions while embracing innovation in the kitchen. With the Thermomix® TM7, we hope to empower more Malaysians to explore, recreate and share these recipes that define the country’s rich food heritage.

For Sid, however, it all comes back to the memories behind the food.

Food has always been how Malaysians connect with family, friends and with one another,” he said. This collection isn’t just about recreating familiar dishes. It is about celebrating the memories behind them, being creative and showing how our culinary traditions can continue evolving while staying true to their roots.

More Malaysian Classics to Explore

The Malaysian Flavours Collection also features creations by Thermomix® Malaysia Research & Development Chef Mandy Kee, specially developed for the Merdeka celebration. The line-up includes familiar favourites such as Chicken Curry, Roti Canai, Pandan Muah Chee, Ondeh Ondeh, Nyonya Laksa and Kaya Burnt Cheesecake. From savoury classics to sweet treats, the recipes showcase just how varied Malaysian food can be – and how many different stories can exist within our shared culinary culture. As we celebrate another Merdeka, perhaps that is what makes Malaysian food worth holding on to.

Recipes may change. Ingredients can be reinvented. Cooking methods can evolve with technology. But the memories remain. Because sometimes, all it takes is one familiar aroma or a single bite to take us straight back home. The Malaysian Flavours Collection is available as part of the Thermomix® TM7 experience through Cookidoo®, allowing home cooks to discover and recreate a selection of Malaysian-inspired recipes in their own kitchens.
